Oil on Wood

Patrice Carmichael

Tell us a bit about yourself

I've been creating for the last ten years. My art is based on my experiences, mainly in quiet landscapes. For the last four years my muse has been the Canadian Arctic. Quiet, wild landscapes and the people that occupy them.

What inspires you?

I paint in oil using the three primary colours to create my pallette. Mostly I paint on wood. I begin with a specific photographed scene and then mainly let it be my emotions that tell the story. The photographs depicted are layered and blended all using original images taken on my travels to the Arctic. They are meant to feel like scenes from a storybook. I like to think forward and imagine it as something that once happened or existed.
The method behind the madness
I am both city mouse and country mouse. I enjoy exploring in general. I divide my time between my family with 3 children and creating.A few years into my painting journey I sold one of my polar bear paintings to a First Nations leader here in the city. We met for coffee and he wanted to hear why I had painted this. He was very connected to it. It was through this conversation I found my way to knowing I must explore this landscape. Last spring while camping out on the Arctic ocean, I came upon the scene that was the painting I had created.
